Abstract/Contents:In 1818 Dr. William Richardson published a book extolling the virtues of creeping bent grass, and as the book is no longer readily available, the author of the article quotes freely from Dr. Richardson's book to demonstrate how significantly he predated and predicted much of what would be considered to be modern (1929) problems of turfgrasses. Although Dr. Richardson's book was intended for the cultivation of bent grass as an agricultural grass, his insights on the establishment, fertilization, and maintenance of the grass are as pertinent as when they were first published. Issues of diseases and weeds are discussed, as well as soil conditions and their effects upon the health of the grass. Dr. Richardson was also directly responsible for the introduction of bent grass into the United States.
