Abstract/Contents:"The first principle of good golf course design is variety. Those courses are valued most which provide, either naturally or artificially, the widest test of the judgement, skill, and strength of the player. This is the economic side of golf design and golf practice; but as in other professions, recreational or otherwise, there is also the esthetic [aesthetic] side. Beauty and use should be inseparable. Humanity needs both. We begin of necessity with the economic side and the useful, but life will not be complete until we have added beauty to use by thoughtful plan and loving care." Includes sections on: boundary plants, which cover unsightly objects; background and framework plantings, which may increase visibility; specimen groups and individuals, which may serve as direction guides, and a classified list of selected plants for Northern golf courses.
