Abstract/Contents:A two-year study was conducted on two fairway turfgrass soils initially high in sodium in order to monitor the influence of gypsum on the sodium content in the soil. The two locations were the Silverbell and Fred Enke golf courses in Tuscon, Arizona. Ten foot treatment plots were formed. Gypsum was then applied to both courses (Nov. 1986) at rates equivalent to 0, 1, 2, and 4 tons per acre. Soil sampling was done at a depth of 3 inches below the turfgrass thatch layer; ten samples were collected from each plot representing a composite sample. The gypsum moved quickly into the soil at both sites with sodium levels decreasing from 817 ppm to 540 ppm in the control plots after irrigation because of winter overseeding; gypsum treatment resulted in significantly lower sodium at the Silverbell golf course. Six months after the application of gypsum, there were no differences between control and experimental plots; 12 months showed a linear relationship between soil sodium level and treatment application rate. The Fred Enke golf course received no reduction in sodium level due to gypsum application. Gypsum applications were effective in maintaining lower sodium levels at the effluent-treated golf course when compared to untreated plots.
