| Abstract/Contents: | "Field and greenhouse studies recently completed at the Pennsylvania Agricultural Experiment Station have shown that there are significant differences in the tolerance of seedlings of Kentucky bluegrass, creeping red fescue and colonial bentgrass to 2,4-D." Applied at rates of 1/2 and 1 pound per acre to seedlings of all three species when they were 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks old, serious damage was observed to all species at the two week old stage. At four weeks, serious damage was found in the bent, less in the fescue and little in the bluegrass. As the seedlings age, only the bent continued to show damage. The greenhouse experiments largely confirm the field tests. It is concluded that turf density should be taken into account when applying 2,4-D, as well as the species and age of the turf. |
