Abstract/Contents: | "Cocomposting has provided a relatively low cost answer to rising disposal fees for biosolids and a statewide ban on landfilling yard trimmings, according to Kirby Murray, director of public works in Eureka Springs [Arkansas]. Annual operating expenditures at the open-air windrow facility are less than $10,000. The facility, which includes a composting pad with room for two windrows, a roof, tractor-mechanical turner and chipper, cost $140,000, Murray says. The city composts 500 cubic yards of biosolids (30 percent solids) with 800 cubic yards of yard trimmings annually. The quantities generated provide for a near perfect mixture, Murray says. Yard trimmings are collected monthly, including a significant amount of branches and limbs processed into one-inch chips. Material is composted for about 20 days in good weather to meet biosolids pathogen reduction requirements. In winter, the process takes somewhat longer. The finished product is given away to residents, who are kept on a waiting list. The finished product is taken away immediately. 'In an area where topsoil is at a premium, this product is in high demand and is gone within a day or two after a windrow is completed,' says Murray." |
