Abstract/Contents:"St. Augustine grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum [Walt.] Kuntze) is the most important turfgrass in Florida and the chinch bug (Blissus insularis Barber) is its greatest threat. Because of its chinch bug resistance, 'Floratam' St. Augustinegrass is used in millions of Florida lawns. Most turfgrass produced in Florida is Floratam. The chinch bug threat increased noticably in 1985 with the discovery of a chinch bug population (PDP = Polyploid Damaging Population) which kills Floratam. The problem has been reported in lawns and in sod farms, in muck and in sand soil, and in most counties of Florida, and some areas have been devastated. Inheritance studies porve that this is definitely a distinctive race of southern chinch bug. Resistance bioassay has resulted in the development of polyploid cultivar FX-10 with resistance to the PDP, Floratam-killing chinch bug. Despite this success, and because of the uncertain future of this problem, this research addressess the biology of resistance. This is important scientifically because St. Augustinegrass resistance to chinch bugs is sometimes very strong, and its understanding can contribute to the study of resistant grasses generally. Important practical applications may include the discovery of new genetic defenses, the "shoring up" of traditional defenses, and the assessment of risk."
