Abstract/Contents:"Salinity is defined as an accumulation of various salts in soil or water. Salts accumulate because of insufficient natural precipitation to leach them out of soil...Primary effects of salinity on plant growth is that of cell dehydration or plasmolysis. A plant root growing in a saline environment cannot obtain enough water for normal growth due to the affinity of salt for water. A saline environment also causes nutrient imbalance in the plant, possible toxic effects at high salt concentrations, and an indirect, but major effect on soil structure which in turn causes aeration and compaction problems in the root zone. Visual effects of salinity on turf are noted in wilted turf, blue-green color of turf, reduced top growth (fewer clippings per unit area), and ultimate thinning of turf density at very high salinity levels in the soil."
