Abstract/Contents: | "Seven fungicides were applied to plots of creeping bentgrass for control of dollar spot. Plots were mowed at 0.5 inch and were irrigated daily for a total of 1.5 inches of water per week. Trimec herbicide was applied in Oct 1993 for post emergent weed control. No pre-emergent herbicides of fertilizers were applied in 1994. Fungicides were applied using a CO²-pressurized (25 psi) backpack sprayer with a flat fan nozzle to 5 ft x 5 ft plots. The sprayer was calibrated to deliver 5 gal spray solution per 1000 sq ft. Fungicides were applied 30 Jun, 28 Jul, and 25 Aug. Four replications per treatment were arranged in a randomized block design. Precipitation was below normal in Apr and May and above normal from Jun through Sep. Temperatures were near or slightly below normal with warm days and cool night creating long dew periods. Disease development was from natural inoculum. Dollar spot developed rapidly during Jul and Aug. All fungicide treatments effectively controlled dollar spot. Banner 1.1E, Eagle 40W, and Sentinel 40WG were the most effective treatments. A malfunction in the irrigation system in early Sep resulted in drought injury to the plot area and prevented further disease evaluations. Data show that monthly application of fungicides prevents dollar spot injury to creeping bentgrass." |
