Abstract/Contents:"In turf areas, particularly around golf courses, you encounter both types of flow, saturated and unsaturated. Successful management depends upon your recognition of the type of flow with which you are dealing. In places where you have unwanted water, such as in areas with high water tables where wet spots or marshes occur, the water usually present under positive pressure and getting rid of it depends upon opening up large channels into which water can flow and be carried away in response to gravitational forces. Here, tile drains encased in coarse sands or gravel are appropriate." Getting rid of water where it is present under negative pressure, where soil is too wet but not saturated, involves the process of unsaturated flow where water must move along particle surfaces in very small pores. Rates of flow usually are slow under such conditions. Gravity is not much help, because the particles and small pores have more pull. Evaporation can pull water from greater depths, but this is slow. Plants can absorb water at the roots and transport it to leaf surfaces where it is evaporated. Water can be removed from great depths by this means.
