Abstract/Contents:A study was undertaken to evaluate white grub control by 6 insecticides in turfgrass. "Annual white grubs damaged many home lawns and other areas of turfgrass during the fall of 1973. This insect has a one year life cycle with eggs hatching in June and half-grown or larger grubs feeding on grass roots until cold soil temperatures cause them to go below the frost line to overwinter. Damage was most apparent in September." In September, 1973, 18 lawns infested with grubs were treated with insecticides. Chlordane at 5 lb/A and Primicid did not control grubs. Dursban at 4 lb/A gave some control, but it was insufficient for complete recovery. Dylox at 4 lb/A and Diazinon at 5 lb/A as spray or granules gave satisfactory control. In all instances, the treated area was irrigated to soak the insecticide into the soil. Six insecticides were tested in the laboratory for control of annual white grubs. Grubs were placed in cartons, covered with 1000g of insecticide treated soil, and overlayed with sod. Insecticides used were: chlordane 2.5 ppm, diazinon 2.5 ppm, Dursban 2 ppm, trichlorfon 4 ppm, Aspon 2 ppm, and Imidan 2 ppm. Treatments were replicated 5 times. Live and dead grubs were counted every 48 hours and live grubs returned to the bottom of the cartons. Diazinon gave excellent control. Trichlorfon (Dylox or Proxol) gave acceptable control.
