Abstract/Contents:"The primary objective in the cool-season grass breeding program is to develop cultivars of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass that are resistant to brown patch caused by Rhizoctonia solani...To make our new selections more susceptible to brown patch, we apply heavy rates of nitrogen, usually in excess of 3 lb/1,000 sq ft and have the turf well watered with a minimum of 2 inches per week. When the relative humidity is high, along with high temperatures, the plots are inoculated. This usually occurs at the end of June. After the plots are inoculated, we maintain the high fertility levels and keep the plots well watered. Approximately 7 to 10 days after inoculation, brown patch develops and we record the disease reaction on all plots. At the present time, no single tall fescue or perennial ryegrass experimental or released cultivar has complete resistance to Rhizoctonia solani."
