| Abstract/Contents: | "There is much discussion about the extent to which turf roots contribute to the enrichment of the turf rootzone with organic matter. With this in mind, investigations were made in two field trials and on six sports pitches. In the course of 3-7 growth seasons there was only a slight increase in the content of organic matter. It amounted to a maximum of 1.3 percent by weight in the field trials and a maximum of 0.5 percent by weight in the pitches, and was limited to the 0-5 cm layer. Below that the organic matter content was generally less. The slight change in the organic matter content of the rootzone contrasted with a considerable accumulation of thatch. This is attributable to unfavourable conditions for mineralisation, due to method of sportfield construction and dryness of local climate, and particularly to the lack of earthworm activity. The investigations show the necessity for a certain amount of organic matter in rootzones." |
