| Abstract/Contents: | "Information on subsurface irrigation of turf sports pitches was obtained from an experiment which simulated various construction methods, and from two actual pitches. Data were obtained on water use, turf biomass production and dry matter content of the clippings, as well as the water holding capacity and drainage rate of the constructions. Subsurface irrigation permitted a uniform distribution of water, but did not reduce water use as compared with overhead irrigation. There were no clear differences in amounts of clippings, sward mass or root mass between subsurface irrigation and overhead irrigation, but in dry periods overhead irrigation in measured doses gave a higher dry matter content in the clippings than subsurface irrigation. A great build-up of thatch, to the extent of 2 to nearly 3.5 kg/m2 dry matter, was obtained in spite of the continual moistness of the constructions with subsurface irrigation. Water holding capacity and drainage rate of constructions are closely related to the particle size, and specially improved by underlayers of gravel or use of porous sand (lava) in the construction." |
