| Abstract/Contents: | "The results are reported from an investigation of the suitability of synthetic coverings as substitutes for organic mulching materials, particularly to suppress weeds among newly-planted trees and shrubs. A trial from March 8 to July 25 1980 included four Lutravil products of various weights and colours, and two Enka products, grey and black. The main essentials of a mulch layer are to level out fluctuations in the microclimate and to check weeds while also allowing biological activity to continue. These requirements were fulfilled almost completely by the two Enka coverings. The black Enka material was the only one to prevent gound frost for the whole recording period, and the soil under both Enka coverings was weed-free at the end of the trial and showed perfect crumb structure. With the four Lutradur coverings some undesirable effects were actually enhanced. Ground frost was not completely prevented, weed growth was more than on the uncovered control areas, and temperature maxima on the soil surface were increased." |
