| Abstract/Contents: | Outside of San Jose, California, in San Mateo county, there has been debate for years about building a new golf course. Since the 1960's, environmental groups have been battling golfers who want a new golf course. There are only two golf courses in this area, with 800,000 residents. The plans were to build a golf course on a small part of a 4,000-acre piece of land that was designated for recreational use by the United States government. But environmentalists argued this, due to new species of animals found in the area. Then the golf course planners decided to move the course to another area. But the environmentalist groups disagreed with that also, saying it interfered with the flight pattern of Monarch butterflies. Since there is not much land left in the county, there are not many more sites possible for a golf course. The county examined different areas of land, but all 22 of the proposed sights was opposed by the Sierra Club. A designer of golf courses, Bradford Benz says that a golf course would help protect fragile areas by maintaining the land. Debates are still going on, on whether to build a golf course in the area. |
