Abstract/Contents:Germination of seeds of tall fescue cv. Kentucky-31 was not affected by a medium of 1.02-2.54 g woodchip/newspaper mulch (66:33 w/w) in 40 ml water. However, germination of perennial ryegrass, Lespedeza cuneata and red clover seeds was significantly reduced by the mulch. When water was removed from the mulch, germination levels in moist mulch were 19-61% for red clover and 25-41% for L. cuneata compared with control values of 92 and 88%, resp. The leachate from the mulch did not affect germination. Analysis of both mulch and leachate showed high B levels in the former. Germination of all spp. was reduced when up to 100 p.p.m. boric acid was used in the germination medium. Under field conditions, all spp. gave more than 75% cover after 5 months even in the presence of mulch; it is suggested that B is quickly leached out of the mulch.
