Abstract/Contents:In field trials in 1975-6, in the Notec river valley, Poland, the effect of covering tufted grasses (Deschampsia caespitosa, Holcus lanatus, Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea, F. pratensis, Phleum pratense, Avenastrum (=Helictotrichon) pubescens, Anthoxanthum odoratum and Arrhenatherum elatius) with soil during ploughing and resowing of natural grasslands was studied in relation to their mode of regrowth, morphology, anatomy of regrowing stems and higher competitive ability of the regenerated grasses in comparison with seedlings. Regrowth of the tufted grasses occurred by means of stems, morphologically and anatomically resembling rhizomes. They penetrated to the surface of the soil and there developed tillers. Under opt. soil moisture conditions and suitable management, seedlings developed rapidly, restricting the excessive regrowth of the tufted grasses.
