Abstract/Contents:"A 2 year study assessed the heat resistance of 137 genotypes. In 1990 the glasshouse temperature was slowly increased to 48°C maximum over 205 days imposing a chronic heat stress. In 1991 the temperature was raised to the maximum in 90 days causing more acute heat stress. Heat resistance was visually assessed as percent of leaf firing. Rankings of individual gentoypes of Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis, and Festuca arundinacea varied little between chronic and acute temperature regimes. However, there was a major change in rankings for the other 4 species. With chronic heat stress, all genotypes of Agrostis stolonifera var. stolonifera ranked low, while under acute stress there were distinct cultivar separations. Just the opposite occurred with F. rubra subsp. commutata, F. ovina var. ovina, F. rubra subsp. rubra and F. longifolia with all genotypes ranked very high or high under chronic stress, but medium or low under acute heat stress. No genotypes of L. perenne or F. arundinacea rated above high under chronic stress, while 23 P. pratensis genotypes ranked very high. In summary, there is a large genotypic pool of heat resistance within each of the 7 cool-season turfgrass species from which to breed heat resistant cultivars."
