| Abstract/Contents: | "Fungicides were evaluated for control of ergot in field plots of Kentucky bluegrass (`Coventry') at the Central Oregon Agricultural Research Center (Powell Butte site). Standard cultural practices for grass seed production were followed with the exception of fungicide applications. Soils were sandy loam with a pH of 6.9. Plots were infested with ergot at 1 sclerotia/ft² in 1993 and 1994. Fungicides, Punch, Tilt, Folicur, and Orthorix were applied to 10 ft x 20 ft plots replicated four times in a randomized complete block design. Fungicides were applied with 8003 TwinJet nozzles on a 9 ft CO² pressurized, hand-held, boom sprayer at 40 psi and 30 gals of water/A. Surfactants, Sylgard 309 at 16 fl oz/ 100 gal and R-56 at 1 pt/100 gal were applied in combination with all fundicides except Orthorix, and one Tilt treatment at 4 fl oz/A. Penaturf and Sylgard 309 were applied individually as the second of two treatments following Tilt applications. Treatments were applied 3 June and 13 Jun. The first treatments were made at the initiation of anthesis. One hundred panicles were collected from each plot on 6 Jul. Number of panicles with sclerotia, and sclerotia per sample were determined for each plot. Percent seed germination was determined using AOSA rules for testing seeds. A single application of Punch at 28 fl oz/A was the most effective treatment for control of ergot. In addition, a single or double application of Tilt at 8 fl oz/A, and a double application of Tilt at 4 fl oz/A with Orthorix at 64 fl oz/A significantly reduced the level of ergot compared to nontreated plots. Seed weight and seed germination were not affected by fungicide treatments." |
