Abstract/Contents:"Imazameth has been investigated for bahiagrass growth suppression on grass roadsides in the southern United States. However, information on the efficacy of imazameth for winter weed control and the tolerance of common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) to winter applications of this herbicide is limited. An experiment was initiated in November, 1995 to determine the weed control spectrum and the tolerance of common bermudagrass to imazameth. Imazameth at 0.094 lb. ai/a and sulfometuron at 0.046 and 0.074 lb. ai/a were applied to separate plots on November 9 and December 8, 1995, and January 10, February 7 and March 14, 1996. A nonionic surfactant at 0.25% v/v was included with the November application of imazameth and all applications of sulfometuron. Methylated seed oil at 2.0 pts./a was included with December through March applications of imazameth. Common bermudagrass was in the 20 and 95% dormant growth stage at the November and December, respectively, applications. At the January, February and March applications, common bermudagrass was in the 100% dormant growth stage. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block with three replications. Plot size was 10 ft. by 15 ft. Imazameth and sulfometuron, applied November through March, effectively controlled both wild garlic (Allium vineale L.) and Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum L.). When applied January through March, both rates of imazameth and sulfometuron controlled #> 87% common venuslookinggrass (Triodanis perfoliata (L.) Nieuwl.). When applied in December, imazameth at 0.094 lb. ai/a controlled a higher percentage of common venuslookinggrass than sulfometuron at 0.047 lb. ai/a. November applications of the low rates of imazameth and sulfometuron provided #<57% control of common venuslookinggrass. Regardless of rate or application month, sulfometuron did not control annual sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus L.). November through March applications of imazameth provided levels of annual sowthistle control that ranged from 47 to 85%. However, additional research is needed to define the application time period for annual sowthistle control. Sulfometuron decreased the spring transition (green-up) of common bermudagrass more than imazameth. The only rate and application timing of sulfometuron that did not decrease spring transition in late April was 0.047 lb. ai/a applied in November. Sulfometuron, applied in February and March, decreased spring transition in April more than when applied in the November through January time frame. Sulfometuron at 0.047 and 0.074 lb. ai/a, applied in March, decreased common bermudagrass spring transition in late April 88 and 93%, respectively. However, by late May no decrease in common bermudagrass transition from sulfometuron was evident. Imazameth did not decrease the spring transition of common bermudagrass except when applied in mid-March. Transition in late April was reduced 22 to 26% for mid-March applications of imazameth at 0.094 and 0.156 lb. ai/a, respectively. No reduction in spring transition was observed in late May for any imazameth treatment."
