| Abstract/Contents: | "Imazameth (AC 263,222) has been investigated for use in peanut, control of nutsedge, and as a turfgrass growth regulator. It was tested, here, under a power line right-of-way for control of weed competition to prairiegrass establishment. Concentrations of 0.071 and 0.141 kg ha⁻¹ were compared to siduron at 8.997 kg ha⁻¹ and an untreated control. Siduron was chosen as a check because it is the only preemergent herbicide labeled as safe for turfgrass establishment. Seven-year brush had been mowed with an hydroax the autumn before establishment. On June 6, the Hosmer silty clay loam was cultivated to an eight-inch depth with a fluted disk pulled by a bulldozer. Three passes were necessary to fracture the soil adequately. The experimental design was a split-plot with species as whole plots and chemical treatments as subplots. On June 12, big bluestem at 67 kg ha⁻¹, Indiangrass at 87 kg ha⁻¹, buffalograss at 195 kg ha⁻¹, and switchgrass at 35 kg ha⁻¹ were broadcast by hand into 9.1- by 22.8-m blocks, replicated four times. The seed was then lightly covered with a spike-tooth harrow, one pass. Treatments were spray-applied on June 24 with a hand-held boom and 8004 flat fan nozzles with pressurized CO₂ at 28 psi and 80 gpa into 1.8- by 9.1-m plots. By that time, summer annual weed seeds had begun to germinate. Seedlings were in the one-leaf stage or less. On August 12, subjective visual estimates were made of percent plots covered by prairie grasses or weeds as a group. The prairiegrasses were in the 10- to 12-leaf stage at that time. Untreated plots averaged 30% cover by weeds. Treatment with imazameth reduced weed cover to 4%, which is 13% of the untreated plots. There was no difference in weed control between the two concentrations of imazameth. Siduron was not effective in reducing weed cover. The predominant weed was giant foxtail (Setaria faberi). Pre-existing tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) dominated part of a few plots. Night shade (Solanum spp.), wild garlic (Allium vineale) and oak (Quercus spp.), occurred occasionally. Prairiegrass stands were severely reduced where giant foxtail stand was highly concentrated. Indiangrass cover was not reduced by imazameth, but cover of big bluestem was reduced by 59%. Cover of buffalograss was reduced by 82%, and that of switchgrass was reduced by 94%. Siduron reduced covers of Indiangrass 39%, big bluestem 31%, buffalograss 66%, and switchgrass 33%. Imazameth appears to have potential as a means to assure establishment of Indiangrass and big bluestem. Stands of these two species may be reduced at times, but the advantage of assuring little or no weed competition more than compensates for a reduced stand of these prairiegrasses." |
