Abstract/Contents:Using electrophoresis to identify allozyme variants of phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI/2), the genotype frequencies for the enzyme were established for 23 early cultivars. The technique provided a useful means of cultivar identification and of distinguishing between cultivars, with 193 out of a possible total of 253 pairwise comparisons (76%) having genotype frequencies significantly different at the P < 0.05 level. This result, achieved with a representative sample of 60 plants per cultivar, showed similar discrimination to that achieved by Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability (DUS) testing for Plant Breeders' Rights (PBR), which also employs 60 plants per cultivar. It is concluded, however, that as genotype frequencies for PGI/2 are unlikely to be genetically linked to phenotypic characters, field based testing must continue in order to establish the uniformity and stability of cultivars for important agronomic characters. In discussing the results in the context of DUS testing, it is considered that the use of electrophoretic characters for registration of new cultivars may, in the present state of knowledge, cause erosion of the protection afforded to plant breeders under PBR schemes.
