| Abstract/Contents: | "An examination was made of the response to differences in light intensity of 'in vivo' nitrate reductase activity in leaf tissue of Lolium perenne L. cv S24. Pretreatment of plants for 48 hours at different light levels showed that enzyme activity increased in a linear manner when plotted against the logarithm of the light intensity. The relationship between nitrate reductase activity and solar radiation showed that accumulated solar radiation values received over a three day period before assay could best account for the natural variation found in activity at the time of assay. Plants grown under high levels of natural illumination did not show a diurnal pattern of change in nitrate reductase activity but those given much lower levels did so, indicating that responses to short term changes in natural but relatively high light intensity did not normally occur." |
