Abstract/Contents: | A model is described for predicting the level of aneuploidy in successive generations of a closed population of induced tetraploids. An experimental population was used to demonstrate that the proportion of aneuploid plants increased sharply for two to three generations and then stabilized at a level determined by the gametic output of the euploid plants. A change in the gametic output of the aneuploids had a relatively small effect on the final level of aneuploidy. It is suggested that the chromosomal stability of such populations depends on the feasibility of selecting euploids which consistently produce a high proportion of euploid progeny. |
