Abstract/Contents: | "Controlling one turfgrass species in mixed turfgrass stands is a challenge. Our objective was to determine the tolerance of six turfgrass species to isoxaflutole under greenhouse and field conditions. 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolinifera L.), 'SDF' bentgrass (a local New England type creeping bentgrass), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), red fescue (Festuca rubra L.), and tall fescue (Festuca arundinaceae Schreb.) were included for our studies. Turfgrass plugs (10.2 cm-diam.) were taken from extablished monoculture stand of each species. These plugs were transplanted in sand culture pots in the greenhouse. Pots were watered daily and fertilized as needed. Turfgrass was mown to 2 cm once a week. After 4 weeks of growth in the greenhouse, isoxaflutole at 0, 0.9, 0.18, 0.36, 0.54, and 0.72 lb ai/A was applied POST to each turfgrass species with a CO₂-backpack sprayer at a pressure of 22psi in 50 gpa. Foliar injury to turfgrass species was visually estimated on a scale of 0 to 100% (0=no injury and 100=completely dead) over a 8-wk period. Dry weights of above-ground biomass were determined for the final evaluation. In general, turfgrass injury was correlated well with the dry matter produciton. As injury to turfgrass species increased with increased rate of isoxaflutole, dry matter production declined. Tall fescue was most tolerant to isoxaflutole with only 5 to 14% dry weight reduction at the 0.18 to 0.72 lb/A, respectively. Red fescue, perennial ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass were moderately tolerant (5 to 20% reduction) to the 0.18 lb/A rate. However, the hightest rate (0.72 lb/A) showed 40 to 50% dry weight reduction. Creeping bentgrass was most susceptible (70% reduction) to the 0.18 lb/A of isoxaflutole, while 'SDF' bentgrass exhibited 55-60% reduction. Turfgrass tolerance to isoxaflutole could be ranked tall fescue as the most tolerant species, followed by red fescue, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, 'SDF' bentgrass, and 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass. This type of species tolerance to isoxaflutole could be explored for potential use of this material for selective control of one turfgrass species in mixed turfgrass stands." |
