Abstract/Contents:"A field experiment was designed to examine the effects of five expellant materials applied at three different rates on the earthworm populations of a grassed area. Number of earthworms expelled on application, subsequent survival rates, casting rates and the effects on turf quality were also considered. Mustard and formaldehyde expelled the most earthworms and survival rates after expelling were not significantly different to those of earthworms collected from untreated areas. On application, mustard and formaldehyde caused scorch to the turf and showed no ability to significantly suppress subsequent earthworm activity. Potassium permanganate, rotenone and detergent expelled very few earthworms but provided a stastically significant short-term reduction in earthworm casting. However, at best, this was to only approximately 54% of casting found for the control areas. None of the expellant materials examined were found to offer satisfactory, long-term earthworm control."
