Abstract/Contents:"A field trial was designed to evaluate turf established using `liquid sod' (a hydroseeding treatment using pre-germinated seed and other constituents) compared with conventional seeding and turfing methods. Each establishment method had two species mixes comprising Agrostis castellana Boiss & Reut./Festuca rubra ssp. commutata Gaud. and Lolium perenne L./Poa pratensis L., Liquid Sod had an additional two treatments with pure stands of Agrostis spp. and Lolium perenne. There were two phases of research; phase one focused on the rate of turf establishment between liquid sod and seeding. After the germination period, the ground cover of live species was compared with those of the turfed swards. The second phase of research examined the playing quality and drainage performance under conditions of simulated wear of the swards established using the three different treatments. Liquid sod showed a clear advantage over the seeded plots in terms of plant development and ground cover and a dense sward was evident one month after the liquid sod was applied. The liquid sod appeared to be more susceptible to disease in the early stages of development but fungicide treatment meant that this had no apparent long-term effects on sward quality. There was some that root density on the liquid sod was slightly less than on the seeded and turfed swards five months after grass established but no significant differences were recorded after six months of wear. Ground cover during wear was slightly higher on those plots established using liquid sod than on the seeded plots, although the more mature grass on the turfed plots had the greatest wear tolerance. There was no indication that the liquid sod had any adverse affect on drainage. In general, water infiltration rates were similar on most treatments but the lowest values were obtained on the turfed plots with a L. perenne/P. pratnesis sward. Hardness and traction values on the liquid sod swards were generally intermediate to those on the seeded and turfed areas."
