Abstract/Contents: | "Turf Managers stand to gain enormous benefit from selecting the correct species and if possible cultivar of grass, or mixture of these, for the particular conditions of an area. Inappropriate grass selection can result in poor quality turf even if management practices are of a high standard... The suitability of a grass to an area will be determined by the available irrigation, climate (rainfall, temperature, number of frosts, etc.) and sports use... To grow strong, healthy, dense turf which will withstand and recover from wear, a deep root system must be developed. Deep rooted grass also occupies a larger volume of soil, which allows it to make better use of water and nutrients." Proper irrigation, nutrition, mowing, aeration, and thatch are all vital to obtaining this deep root system. |
