Abstract/Contents:A comparison of chromosome association at first meiotic metaphase in tetraploid hybrids between L. perenne and L. multiflorum and in autotetraploid L. perenne revealed that the hybrids had significantly higher frequencies of bivalents and lower frequencies of mutlivalents and chiasmata. A significant increase in multivalent frequency with increase in chiasmata frequency occurred in both forms but the increase was much smaller in the hybrids. The differences in chromosome associations between the two forms are thought to reflect differences in chiasmata distribution. The results indicated a significant degree of preferential chromosome pairing in the hybrids.
