Abstract/Contents:"(1) Treatment of seedlings of six maritime and three inland species to short periods of cold in the laboratory showed that maritime species of a southern distribution in Britain were more sensitive to cold than were inland or northern maritime species. (2) Phenological observations suggest that failure of seed maturation because of a shorter growing season may prevent some southern maritime species from occurring in northern Britain. (3) Competition experiments between maritime and inland species using the de Wit model indicated that inland species have a competitive advantage under non-saline conditions, whilst the competitive ability of maritime species is increased under saline conditions. (4) It is concluded that the distribution of maritime cliff species is governed by a complex series of interactions between their tolerance of salt, poor growth rates compared with inland species in the absence of salt, and sensitivity to cold both in the survival of individual plants and in relation to seed maturation."
