Abstract/Contents:In experiments at Aberystwyth, UK, the effect of removing the root tips of main roots of Lolium perenne cv. S24 at 21 or 31 days after germination was studied. In the 1st 10 days after excision plants produced more tillers, leaves and roots than the untreated controls and had more highly branched roots, but after 10 days the growth rate decreased relative to the control. Excision at 31 days produced greater increase in dry wt. and leaf surface area over the control than excision at 21 days. Net photosynthetic rate/unit leaf surface (but not /g leaf dry wt.) increased significantly 2 days after root tip excision, then decreased to values similar to the control. Root tip removal decreased NAR immediately and after 5 and 13 days, but increased NAR 3 and 9 days after treatment.
