| Abstract/Contents: | Describes the changes that have taken place in Northeastern University's campus over the past ten years. The university underwent a landscape makeover. The decision to put a lot of time, money and effort into a project of this scale in such a busy city like Boston was made when a survey of 1000 high school students said that they made their choice of where to attend college based on the campus's appearance. With small lots, hard surfaces, little sun, and heavy traffic, this project took a creative team of landscape architects. One main goal of the project was to reduce urban glare off the pavement. They combined red paving brick and green grass to absorb the light. Next, they softened the edges where the hard buildings met the concrete by adding different size trees to create a slope. By combining contrasting colors, sun filtering trees, and many other gardens, Northeastern has become a place where college kids want to "hang out". Great effort goes into keeping the beauty of the campus up. Millions of tons of trash are removed each year, and the occasional graffiti or gum on the brick paving keeps beautification of the campus a constant priority. |
