Abstract/Contents:The evolution of soil humus content was followed for 12 years under four different organic fertilizer treatments (half of each treatment receiving sugar-factory lime, half receiving none) on Belgian silt soils (humus at the start of the experiment = 2.08 percent) and the values were adapted to theoretical exponential curves. The effect of farmyard manure (30 ton/ha per rotation) on soil humus content was important. The influence of the incorporation of crop residues was relatively low. One supply per rotation of Italian ryegrass (green manure treatment) maintained the soil at approximately the same humus level. The control treatment showed a decrease in the organic matter content of the arable layer. Exception being made for the farmyard manure treatment, the influence of sugar-factory lime was well marked. From the soil humus evolution and the average amount of organic matter incorporated per year and per treatment, the "global" humification coefficients on the different organic matter treatments were calculated.
