| Abstract/Contents: | 15N-labelled urea was incubated in pots of a ferrallitic soil amended with maize straw and planted with Italian ryegrass. Straw enhanced the transfer of fertilizer N to the amine and nonhydrolysable soil N fractions, resulting in markedly decreased plant growth and N uptake. The determination of mineralizable N and N uptake revealed the existence of a nitrogen pool which received a larger proportion of 15N than did the N fractions extracted by chemical fractionation. This pool had a shorter life than soil OM and played an important role in plant nutrition. |
