| Abstract/Contents: | Tetraploid strains of Italian ryegrass Nakei-22, Nakei-24, Takakei-13 and Yanaiku-96 and their diploid parental cv. Tottori, Oobahikari, Waseaoba and Waseyutaka, resp. were grown at 15, 20 or 25 deg C for 30 days after seed germination. Plant ht., wt. of individual tillers, wt. and area of a single leaf and specific leaf wt. were higher in tetraploids than diploids, but numbers of tillers and leaves and leaf age were higher in diploids at all temp. studied. Leaf area and DM production in tetraploid strains were higher early in the experiment, but with increased age, differences between tetraploids and diploids reduced, particularly in leaf area at 20 and 25 deg . Specific leaf areas were lower LWR were similar and NAR slightly higher in tetraploids than in diploids. Percentage water soluble carbohydrate content of stems was higher in tetraploids, and the tetraploid:diploid ratio was higher at lower than at higher temp. |
