Abstract/Contents: | "'Glade' and 'Merion' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) were evaluated for response to low light levels and possible shade adaptive mechanisms. Mature swards of each cultivar were transplanted into an environmental simulator constructed to measure physiological and morphological responses of turfgrasses to stresses under controlled laboratory conditions. Swards were grown at light levels of 150 and 1000 μE m-2 sec-1, with a 12 hr photoperiod for 14 days. Day/night temperatures were 25/20 C. Glade swards had higher apparent photosynthetic rates (AP) than Merio swards at both light levels. Dark respiration rates (RD) of the cultivars were not proportionately reduced as AP rates declined with lower light levels. RD/AP quotient data showed Glade swards had a more positive carbon balance than Merio swards under reduced light levels. The lack of RD reduction with reduced AP rates under low light conditions may suggest why Kentucky bluegrasses do not perform as well as other cool season grasses under shaded conditions, and for cultivar performance differences." |
