Abstract/Contents:"The California Department of Transportation is planning a realignment of Route 299 west of Redding. A portion of this realignment will be through decomposed granite soils which are highly erosive and difficult to revegetate. A project was designed to provide cut and fill slopes on which erosion control studies would be conducted. Several stepped slope configurations were used on the cut slopes. Both cuts and fills were divided into small plots to evaluate vegetative treatments, ammendments, fertilizers and erosion control materials. Brush layering was included on one fill slope. Research contracts were awarded to U.C. Davis to study erosion rates, engineering properties, freeze thaw impacts, water movement, soil fertility, nutrient availability, mycorrhizal infection and product performance. Due to severe winter storms, the research sites suffered significant failures. Most of the research plots were destroyed which prevented much of the anticipated data from being collected. The soils and nutrition studies are being continued, but much of it in a laboratory setting rather than the field. The engineering studies were terminated. In their place, biotechnical engineering measures were employed to stabilize the slopes and prevent further deterioration. These measures have been quite successful."
