Abstract/Contents: | Summarizes the results of testing to determine the best fescues for low-input, cool-season turf. The three species tested were blue fescue (Festuca ovina ssp. glauca), hard fescue (F. longifolia), and tall fescue (F. arundinacea). The species were subjected to varying mowing frequencies: 1) as needed to maintain 2-inch height, 2) monthly at 3-inch height, and 3) monthly at 3 inches but not until after seed heads had matured. The tall fescue varieties received the lowest ratings for all three frequencies and had more weed problems. Blue and hard fescues remained green and resisted crabgrass infestations. Concludes that blue and hard fescues are viable alternatives for low-use areas, providing fine texture, and providing acceptable quality under minimal-input management. |
