Abstract/Contents:Reports on a study used to determine the use of sugarcane and kenaf in geotextile mats to promote grass establishment. These mats were compared to wood, coconut, and synthetic fiber mats. Describes methods used to obtain the fibers from the stalks and create the test site. Mats of different weights were used and for both plants, the medium weight worked best. Bermudagrass growth was higher under the sugarcane and kenaf than under the wood and coconut fiber products. Concludes that sugarcane and kenaf mats are as effective as commercial mats. Also, they biodegraded in less than 7 months, whereas the coconut fibers and synthetic fibers did not.
