Abstract/Contents:"Field studies were conducted in 1996 and 1997 to determine best control of the relatively new sedge weed, Cock's Comb Kyllinga (Kyllinga syuamulata). This is an annual species that thrives in moist and closely mowed areas, such as golf course fairways. Kyllinga is considered a new weed species largely in part to changing herbicide trends. The increased popularity of preemergence herbicides to control annual grass weed species has possibly provided a niche for kyllinga. Postemergence herbicides such as MSMA and DSMA also are effective, but their use has declined due to increases in preemergence herbicide use. Postemergence trials were conducted on a golf course in South Carolina to determine Kyllinga squamulata control in hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon x transvaalensis 'Tiftway 419'). Herbicide treatments included Basagran T/O (bentazon) at 0.75 lb ai/A, Mange (halosulfuron) at 0.031 lb ai/A, sulfentrazone at 0.5 lb ai/A, MSMA at 1 lb ai/A, MSMA + Image (imazaquin) at 1.0 lb ai/A + 0.375 lb ai/A respectively, and in 1997, CGA 136872 (primisulfuron) at 0.04375 lb ai/A. All were applied as single and repeat treatments 4 weeks after initial (WAI), except the CGA product which was reapplied at 3 WAI. The preemergence trial was performed at Clemson University's turfgrass research plots on Tiftway bermudagrass. Herbicides used were Barricade (prodiamine) at 0.75 lb ai/A, Pennant (metolachlor) at 4.0 lbs ai/A, Dimension (dithiopyr) at 0.5 lb ai/A, Ronstar 50 WP (oxadiazon) at 2.0 lbs ai/A, Princep T+O (simazine) at 1.5 lbs ai/A, Image (imazaquin) at 0.25 lb ai/A, Pendulum (pendimethaline) at 3.0 lbs ai/A, sulfentrazone at 0.5 lb ai/A, and Manage (halosufuron) at 0.063 lb ai/A. Best postemergence control (95 to 100%) was obtained with single and sequential applications of sulfentrazone and MSMA + Image, and sequential applications of Mangae and MSMA. These were followed by sequential applications of Basagran T/O and CGA 136872 with ~80% control. Single applications of Basagran T/O, Manage, and CGA 136872 provided control <80%. Sulfentrazone, MSMA + Image, and Ronstar 50 WP had highest bermudagrass turf injury at 17%, 23%, and 34% respectively at 1 WAI, but all treatments fully recovered by 2 WAI. Best preemergence control was obtained by Ronstar 50 WP (94%), Sulfentrazone (63%), and Pennant (53%) at 3 WAI. Preemergence kyllinga control dropped significantly after 3 weeks to less than 40% control for all products by 7 WAI."
