| Abstract/Contents: | When results of a recent screening programme were used to analyse variation in genome size within a sample of British grasses, geographical and ecological patterns were detected. Large genome size was associated with plants in which growth occurs during the cool conditions of winter and early spring. From early spring to midsummer, changes in the identity of the most actively growing grassland species were associated with a progressive reduction in genome size. It is suggested that as temperature rises growth by cell enlargement gives way to growth involving high rates of cell division. Evidence to support this was obtained from growth analysis in seedlings of Poa annua of different genome sizes from the same population. |
