| Abstract/Contents: | "The mannitol-1-phosphate dehydrogenase [mtld] gene is a salinity and drought tolerance gene which was added to the genome of 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass in Dr. Sticklen's lab....The goal of this research is to study the amount of drought and salinity tolerance imparted by the mtld gene. Several clones of bentgrass plants engineered with this gene are under evaluation. These plants will be assessed for gene expression by assaying for the presence of the mtld protein. They also will be evaluated for production of mannitol....Results from the preliminary drought experiment show no obvious trend in drought resistance among the clones....Data from the salinity experiment have yet to be analyzed. Inferences regarding the expression of the mtld gene and its activity in turfgrass stress tolerance will be revealed with further research." |
