Abstract/Contents:Evaluates gibberellic acid, kinetin, ethephon, abscisic acid, and fuscicoccin dissolved in acetone for their effects on rate and amount of germination in 'Merion' Kentucky bluegrass. In the first experiment of three, seed samples were soaked in the growth regulators for an hour, vacuum dried, and germinated on moistened blotters with alternating temperature treatments to simulate typical day/night outdoor growth conditions. "Samples of seeds treated in the above manner were also used in a greenhouse experiment." A third experiment varied the day/night temperatures to simulate seasonal changes. Germination speed in the first experiment was increased most with gibberellic acid alone and in combination with kinetin, ethephon, and both. Total germination was highest with gibberellic acid and fuscicoccin. In the greenhouse, similar results for germination speed were obtained; total germination was significantly greater with all treatments except kinetin alone. In the third experiment, "[a]t sub-optimal temperature, no beneficial effect from any of the treatments was observed. At optimal temperature, seeds treated with GA₃ [gibberellic acid] plus ethephon, and a combination of GA₃, kinetin and ethephon showed increased speed and total germination. At supra-optimal temperature ... [k]inetin and ethephon treatment by themselves or in combination had no positive promotive effect. Gibberellic acid by itself or in combination with kinetin and/or ethephon, restored germination almost completely." Suggests use of gibberellic acid in combination with kinetin and ethephon for pretreatment of Kentucky bluegrass. Three included tables display data for the three experiments.
