Abstract/Contents:Discusses the possible use of compost for disease suppression in horticultural crops. The soil fumigant methyl bromide has been used in the past to prevent diseases, but this chemical will be phased out by 2005 due to environmental hazards. Soil fumigants also tend to kill beneficial, natural biological control organisms, increasing the chance of infection by newly introduced disease organisms. Composts, which contain beneficial microorganisms, may be used to suppress diseases or to reintroduce beneficial organisms to the soil after fumigation. The effect of composts on nitrogen fertility, and the particularly qualities of compost which lead to better disease suppression, must be better understood before the use of compost for this purpose can become widespread.
