Abstract/Contents:Reviews the literature concerning allelopathy and its potential as a biological control technique. Outlines the types of allelopathy in agroecosystems, including weed allelopathy, crop allelopathy, and the allelopathic potential of crop and weed residues, cyanobacteria, and pollen. Summarizes the factors influencing allelopathy, including morphological, physiological, ecological, habitat, climatic, soil, abiotic and biotic stress factors. Profiles secondary metabolites known to have allelopathic potential, including plant phenolics, plant terpenoids, and other classes. The mechanisms of allelopathic chemicals are discussed. Possible roles for allelopathic cover crops or allelopathic chemicals as natural herbicides in a biological control program are also considered.
