| Abstract/Contents: | "In Italy lawns and sports turfs are mainly established with cool season grasses. In this study the adaptibility of 14 warm-season and 2 cool-season turfgrasses to cultivation in central Italy was evaluated. The species were: Zoysia japonica Steud. Cvs. El Toro, Meyer and Asiak, Zoysia tenuifolia Trin.; Zoysia japonica x tenuifolia cv. Emerald, Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze cvs. Greensteam, Floratine and Floratam; Paspalum vaginatum Swartz, Pennisetum clandestinum Hochst.Chiov.; Cynodon Dactylon L. Pers. Numex Sahara, Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt. Davy cv. Santa Ana, Axoponus affinis Chase, Buchloë dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm.; Festuca ovina L. cv. Bijart and Festuca arundinacea Schreb. cv. Apache. Of the species and cultivars tested, Stenotaphrum secundatum cv. Greensteam, Zoysia japonica cvs. Meyer and Asiak and Z. japonica x tenuifolia cv. Emerald showed higher growth in the irrigated plots. Paspalum vaginatum, the hybrid Cynodon cv. Santa Ana and Festuca ovina cv. Biljart and Festuca arundinacea cv. Apache showed higher values without irrigation. The highest density values were observed in irrigated Zoysia tenuifolia (13.1 shoots per square centimetre), Zoysia japonica cultivars, the hybrid Cynodon cv. Santa Ana and Paspalum vaginatum. The lowest densities were found in the Stenotaphrum secundatum cultivars. All the warm season grass became brown during the winter (for less than a month in Zoysia tenuifolia to 135 days in Buchloë dactyloides). Good general appearance was observed in Paspalum vaginatum, Santa Ana Cynodon, Festuca arundinacea cv. Apache, Zoysia japonica cv. El Toro, Zoysia Tenuifolia and the Zoysia japonica x Zoysia Tenuifolia cv. Emerald. Good colour was observed in Paspalum vaginatum, while the Zoysia entries retained colour longer during the winter. Winter kill was observed in the irrigated plots of Stenotaphrum secundatum cvs. Floratine and Floratam and Pennisetum clandestinum, while Axonopus affinis failed to survive even in the irrigated plots. Taken overall, the warm season grasses Zoysia japonica, Zoysia Tenuifolia, Zoysia japonica x Zoysia Tenuifolia, Paspalum vaginatum, Cynodon dactylon and Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis showed good adaptibility to cultivation in central Italy. All of these grasses show browning off in the winter, but if this is unacceptable the problem may be solved by oversowing with a cool season grass." |
