Abstract/Contents:States that the most widely followed approach in pest control is to take each pest species in turn, outline the damage caused, life history, most advantageous time to affect control and alternative methods of doing so. A second common approach is to list all the available chemicals and alternative methods of control and outline the species which can be treated by each. The principles of pest control and methods available were also discussed. One of the largest mistakes is treating the wrong pest. The steps and principles by which successful pest control could be achieved were suggested as follows: recognize damage symptoms, identify pest accurately, research the biology of the pest, determine size of problem, determine damage threshold, decide on best method of control (management or chemical), check on the results, and at all times be aware of pest situation.
