| Abstract/Contents: | Vegetation samples including Elymus trachycaulus, Bromus tectorum, Poa compressa, big bluestem, blue grama and Polygonum douglasii collected at Rocky Flats, Colorado were ultrasonically washed to remove attached soil and analysed for 239, 240Pu and 238Pu. Mean Pu conc. for washed grass, forb and shrub samples were 1.12, 0.61 and 0.03 pCi/g, resp., compared with a mean of 28.6 for unwashed vegetation samples from an earlier study conducted in the same area. The mean isotopic ratio of 27.2 in vegetation was lower than a ratio of 65.4 in soil, indicating possible differential behaviour of the isotopes in vegetation. Soil attachment to aboveground plant parts ranged from 0 to 0.25 g soil/g plant. The potential for Pu contamination on plant parts due to soil attachment was estimated to range from 0 to 206 Ci/g. |
