| Abstract/Contents: | "This study was designed to investigate seasonal changes and genetic variations in root growth and turf quality in creeping bentgrass. Four bentgrass cultivars, 'Crenshaw', 'Penncross', 'Providence', and 'L-93', were examined from May to October during 1997-1998. Grasses were mowed at 5/32 inch and irrigated on alternate days to replace 100% daily water loss. Decline in turf quality occurred beginnig early July in all four cultivats and was more severe in 1998 than in 1997. Turf exhibited lowest quality in late August. Root growth and production ceased by late July, while severe root dieback occurred in all cultivars in July and August. New roots were regenerated an turf quality recovered in October. From June to September, L-93 had highest turf quality, green leaf biomass, and photochemical efficiency, Providence and Crenshaw were intermediate, and Penncross was ranked the lowest." |
