Abstract/Contents:"Seed viability was evaluated at the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Laboratory according to AOSA germination protocols. Viability of each seed lot was used to calculate seed weight required to plant ryegrass a 3 lbs viable seed/A. The trial was established in Tifton loamy sand at the Blackshank Farm, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, GA. Six replications of six-row plots 10 feet in length were planted 17 Oct. Rows were spaced 8 inches and seed was planted 0.75 in. deep. Stand counts were taken in random 1 foot sections in each of the four center rows on 29 Oct and 17 Nov. At each date, number of dampened-off seedlings (entirely chlorotic or necrotic) were counted. Plot vigor was determined 5 Dec on a 0-5 scale where 0=no emergence and 5=fully vigorous. Five seedlings with apparent symptoms of post-emergence damping off were sampled from each plot. Specimens were washed, surface disinfected for one minute in aqueous 0.05% NaOCl, and placed on V8 juice agar. Frequency of isolation of Pythium spp. from diseased seedlings was determined. Germination varied slightly among lots, but because assays were performed by an independent lab, the entire data set was not available for statistical analysis. Seedling stands varied but differences were not significant in the first date of evaluation. Stand counts decreased slightly in the second evaluation date, possibly due to damping-off of very young seedlings that were not obvious in the second evaluation. Stands in the second evaluation were greater with Apron XL LS (0.36) treatment compared to the treatment with the higher rate of Apron or with the addition of Maxim 4FS (0.1). Frequency of damped-off seedlings was less than 1% in the first evaluation. Frequency of dead and dying seedlings in the second evaluation ranged from 9 to 21%. Differences in damping off, vigor, and frequency of Pythium spp. did not differ among treatments."
